Just thought I would clarify one misconception about X-RAID2. If there are two identical drives, then the array is in fact RAID1. No, not exactly. The array may be RAID1, but there are cases when there are two (or more) RAID1s, combined by LVM. This happens when a two-disk set is upgraded by replacing two drives with larger ones. If the array never had it's drives replaced, it is indeed a single RAID1.

Been testing RN 102 from NetGear yesterday. Performance is OK on large files, drops to slow death on smallish files. Drive caddies are dreadful, especially on removal. When you try to remove the caddy, the caddy slips and the drive remains inside the unit. The retaining mechanism is probably broken by design. It also feels fragile. Earlier models with screws were way more solid, and way more reliable mechanically.

Q: What is the best feature of NETGEAR ReadyNAS? A: A carrying handle at the back of the unit. Ease of setup? There isn't one. Performance? We got, like, 3MB/sec out of it. The network is Gigabit Ethernet, serverd by D-Link switches. Not a best thing there is, but QNAP manages to pump data at least ten times faster on the same network. What model? ReadyNAS NV+ v2. Overall impression? Not quite good.
